Are DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular System Hips the Only Metal on Metal Hips Pulled From the Market?

Comments Off

In August 2010, DePuy issued a voluntary recall of the ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System because of a reported increase need for revision surgeries in patients who had received these types of hip replacement implants.

However, DePuy is not the only company that has made voluntary recalls of metal on metal hip replacements. Zimmer has also voluntary recalled its Durom® Acetabular Component and, recently, the British company Smith & Nephew announced that it was voluntarily pulling its optional metal socket liner that could be used with the R3 Acetabular System hip replacement system off the market.

The stated reasons for the Smith & Nephew recall include an increased risk of:

  • Infection.
  • Fracture.
  • Dislocation.

Additionally, 1.6% of patients who receive the metal socket liner with the R3 Acetabular System hip replacement system are reported to need revision surgery within one year of their hip implant surgeries. That is significantly higher than the 1% revision surgery standard set by Britain's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Approximately 7,700 people are believed to have received the now recalled device within the past few years. If you have had a recent hip replacement, please speak to your doctor about the components used in your surgery and the symptoms of potential side effects of which you should be aware.
