Unlike the Depuy ASR Hip Replacement system that was recalled in 2010, the Depuy Pinnacle® Acetabular Cup System (“Depuy Pinnacle hip replacement system”) is not a full metal on metal hip replacement device. Yet, that does not mean that there are not risks associated with the medical device.

Many of the more than 1,200 adverse reports received by the FDA with regard to the Depuy Pinnacle hip replacement device concern a metal liner that is used with the hip replacement. The metal liner, also known as the Ultamet or Pinnacle metal insert, can rub against the other metal used in the Pinnacle system and create problems similar to those seen with the recalled Depuy ASR hip replacement.

As a patient who has had a Pinnacle implant, or who is considering such an implant, it is important to know that the lack of an FDA recall does not mean that a medical device is right for you or that there are not dangers associated with it. Talk to your doctor about the similarities of a Depuy Pinnacle hip replacement system used with a metal liner and other metal on metal hips, about the risks, and about what the best option is for you.

My husband had a DePuy Pinnacle total metal-on-metal hip replacement in December of 2008, and he is crippled ever since. And that besides his dangerous levels of heavy metal metal poisoning.
