Philadelphia Nursing Homes Acquired by Maryland Company

Comments Off

Five nursing homes in Philadelphia have been acquired by a Baltimore-based company, Mid-Atlantic Health Care, LLC, on July 1, 2011 in a $75 million dollar deal. The facilities affected include Care Pavilion located at 6212 Walnut Street; Cheltenham York Road located at 7101 Old York Road; Cliveden located at 6400 Greene Street; Maplewood Manor located at 125 West Schoolhouse Lane and Tucker House located at 1001 Wallace Street.

Mid-Atlantic currently operates nursing facilities in Maryland and Delaware. This new acquisition will make Mid-Atlantic Health Care the largest skilled nursing company in the city of Philadelphia. The five (5) nursing homes represent approximately 1,176 beds and roughly twenty percent of the market in Philadelphia. Dr. Scott Rifkin, president of Mid-Atlantic stated, “We saw an opportunity to expand our business by acquiring established, well-run facilities with well-trained and committed staff.”

How does this affect the current residents of these nursing facilities? The hope is that any change will be for the better. It appears that Mid-Atlantic will be maintaining the current staff of these facilities. Mid-Atlantic has also indicated that it plans to invest $2.5 million into the betterment of these nursing homes. Nevertheless, as always, families and residents must remain vigilant to ensure that the care remains appropriate. Families and residents should also ask questions about any changes that are being contemplated and/or enacted and how those changes will affect a resident’s daily living and well-being. Regardless of who owns and/or runs a nursing home, the utmost priority must continue to be the safety and welfare of all residents.
