Those suffering from Avascular necrosis may have been subjected to hip resurfacing, or hip replacement, leading to subsequent medical complications. Avascular necrosis literally means “dead bone.” It is a form of arthritis that affects the joints within the hip, and causes lower circulation, and is typically seen in younger and middle aged adults. Hip resurfacing, a development as an alternative to hip replacement, places a metal cap over the head of the a femur, and a matching cup within the pelvic socket, which replaces the articulating surfaces of the hip joint. Although this procedure is known as a viable alternative to a total hip replacement, it is not without its complications. Individuals react different to insert of metals within the body, and although medical professionals do their best to minimize these complications, many still arise.

Those that have received a metal on metal hip resurfacing, including the Stryker Orthopedics hip resurfacing, should be aware of the potential symptoms that point to complications. The most common symptoms associated with hip resurfacing complications are:

Swelling. The metal on metal interaction can commonly cause debris to be ejected from the joint into the surrounding tissue, causing inflammation

Pain. The pressure that you put on the joint can end up causing pain due to uneven weight

Fatigue. As the body compensates for the hip implant, individuals can become more fatigued than typical.

Walking difficulty. Walking with a limp, or any difficulty, could point to a potential complication or bad implant.

Lack of flexibility. With any procedure, there is a possibility for muscle loss, which could cause decreased flexibility.

Noise. Any popping or squeaking should alert the recipient as to the device not working properly.

Also, any other issues such as heart pains, numbness, weight gain, or change in urination habits should be monitored closely.

As with any invasive medical procedure, complications are not entirely unexpected. If you, or a loved one, are experiencing any of the above symptoms, or believe that you may have been fitted with a defective or improper hip resurface or replacement, please contact a medical professional immediately. Staying aware, and educated, are the first steps towards preventing any further complications.
