Erb’s palsy is a birth injury similar to brachial plexus palsy. Brachial plexus palsy is the loss of movement in the upper arm as a result of nerve damage during delivery.  Erb’s palsy is a similar condition that affects the upper and lower arm.

Erb’s palsy is almost immediately recognizable after the delivery.  The child can’t move the affected arm.  There are some cases, however, in which the injury may not be apparent for months after birth. Your baby may be suffering from Erb’s palsy if he or she displays the following symptoms in one arm:

  • Lack of reflexes
  • Holds the affected arm against the body with the elbow flexed.
  • Exhibits little spontaneous movement of the injured arm or hand.
  • Lack of strength & difficulty gripping things

Most cases of Erb’s and plexus palsy will heal naturally, but some babies may require physical therapy or other Erb’s palsy treatment (surgery). If you notice these Erb’s palsy symptoms, or your child’s arm was injured during birth, contact your doctor immediately to discuss a diagnosis and Erb’s palsy treatment options.
