The first case of steroid related fungal meningitis has been confirmed in Pennsylvania.

According to the U.S. Department of Health, the patient was given an epidural steroid injection at Allegheny Pain Management in Altoona. The patient who was identified as a result of the facility’s ongoing record review and patient follow up, is currently hospitalized and is receiving care recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to treat this infection.

Michael Wolf, the Acting Secretary of Health advised they have been working directly with the clinics that received the tainted methylprednisolone acetate injections to ensure patients receive the necessary follow up.

Allegheny Pain Management is one of two facilities in Pennsylvania that received the contaminated methylprednisolone vials. So far, South Hills Pain Clinic, the other PA facility to receive the tainted doses, has not reported any cases of fungal meningitis.

The amount of people infected by the fungal meningitis outbreak has practically doubled since last week. Over 200 people have contracted the disease as a result of the tainted steroid injection.
