Each day, more than 15 people are killed and some 1,200 are injured in crashes that were reported to involve a distracted driver, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Distracted driving is described as engaging in any non-driving activity that has the potential to distract the driver from paying attention to the road. Numerous activities can be considered a driving distraction – such as applying makeup, changing the music station or texting.
Distracted Driving Facts
An estimated twenty percent of injury crashes – that occurred in 2009 – involved reports of distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA).
995 distracted-driving-related crashes were attributed to the use of a cell phone while driving.
5,474 people were killed in 2009 on U.S. roadways. While an estimated 448,000 were injured in car crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving.
Using a cellular device while driving – hand-held or hands-free- delays the drivers’ reaction time similarly to be legally drunk.
Anapol Schwartz Participates In Drive Safely Work Week 2011
The annual event – designed to raise awareness of bad driving habits, and offer safe alternatives – was held from October 3rd through 7th and was sponsored by the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety.
Anapol Schwartz pledged to:
(1) Not contact staff via cell phone or text during driving times.
(2) Work with employees to come up with acceptable response times.
(3) Allow employees adequate response times during known times of driving.
(4) Set a positive example for colleagues.
Support Staff Pledged to:
(1) Not text while driving.
(2) Let calls go to voicemail while driving until they can pull over safely.
(3) Quickly end calls while driving.
The Casey Feldman Memorial Foundation
Joel D. Feldman, Esq., the Managing Shareholder of Anapol, Schwartz and his wife Dianne Anderson established The Casey Feldman Memorial Foundation in honor of their daughter Casey – a victim of a distracted driving accident, in 2009.
The mission of the Foundation is to raise public awareness about driver safety, as well as providing financial support to other causes supported by Casey.
In addition to producing a public service video for the US Dep. of Transportation, Joel also created the Web site, endDD.org (End Distracted Driving) to spread the word and to attract support for the cause.
