National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is from April 18th to the 25th, a time when medical communities and health advocates gather and celebrate the successes of infant immunization programs through educational programs. Infant immunizations have made a tremendous impact on the lives of children and their families. In the 1950s diseases such as measles were common and today a doctor may never see a single case of measles in their career. Immunization programs have reduced hospitalizations and fatalities.
NIIW is a time when an added focus is given to educate parents and care givers about the value of vaccinations. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that vaccines are safe and effective. Prevention is the most cost effective form of health care and protects our most vulnerable youth. The CDC lists 14 childhood diseases that children should be vaccinated against.
Safety is crucial for both the CDC and doctors who offer vaccinations, but myths and misinformation still concern parents and families. Medical research continues to test the safety of these programs.
